Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Review

With a fantastic screen and improved ergonomics, the new Surface Pro is an impressively persuasive hybrid,
with a display that has swelled to near-A4 size; a magnesium alloy chassis that has emerged thinner and lighter than ever; and a smattering of subtle tweaks to the design hint at improved usability.

The Surface Pro 3 makes a great first impression – it’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from Microsoft hardware. The clean, unfussy design oozes luxury, and while we prefer the moody, all-black exterior of the Surface Pro 2, there is something rather alluring about the Surface Pro 3. Light grey metal reaches all around the back and along the tapered edges.

Apple iPad mini 2 with Retina display Review

Apple was rather less effusive about the new, upgraded edition of its compact tablet – the iPad mini with Retina display.

Apple hasn’t only upgraded it to a crisp Retina display, it’s also swapped in the new 64-bit Apple A7 processor found in the Air, and ushered in a wave of more subtle all-round upgrades.

Motorola Moto X (2014) Review

The first Moto X received critical acclaim in the US, but by the time it reached the UK, it had already been surpassed by a number of rivals. With the second generation Moto X, Motorola is making more of a unilateral effort, releasing the phone in the UK at the roughly the same time as the US.

The appeal of the Moto X (2nd Gen) is similar to the first. It runs a clean, unadulterated version of Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) with a guaranteed upgrade to Lollipop (although Motorola hasn’t confirmed when that might be yet), and it makes a refreshing change from the feature overload you get from a Samsung or LG handset.

Apple iPhone 6 Review

Apple finally caved in this year, introducing not one larger-screened model, but two: the iPhone 6 with a 4.7in screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5in screen. It's quite a climbdown on Apple's part, but it had to do it.

The iPhone 6, the smaller of the two phones, is the one that works best. Apple has gone back to rounded edges this time around, moving away from the dead straight sides of the previous four handsets (the edges of the glass on the front are slightly curved, too), and this works to create an impression that the phone is smaller than it is.

Canon Pixma MG6650 Review

The Canon Pixma MG6650 has big shoes to fill. Joining Canon’s Pixma range of all-in-ones as a successor to last year’s award-winning MG6450, and as a mid-range alternative to the high-performance MG7750

Clad in black matte plastic with a glossy plastic copier lid - it's also available in bronze and white, if that takes your fancy - it’s as compact and attractive as all-in-ones get.

Hands on: Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 2014 Review

With a slimmer figure and Intel's exciting new Core M technology inside, the 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad Helix should give the Surface Pro 3 a good run for its money

The two-in-one device is hardly a new concept, yet the 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad Helix is still an exciting device. The reason it's exciting is not because of the stunningly slim dimensions of the new device

Hands on: Dell Venue 8 7000 series Review

A slim, high-spec and clever compact Android tablet: Dell could have a winner on its hands here,
Tablets are all the same these days: black, shiny rectangles.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 series is also a shiny, black rectangle – no change there – but it makse two genuine leaps forward.

But the Dell Venue 8 7000 series isn't only supermodel slim, it's clever, too: it's the first device to use Intel's RealSense snapshot technology, which has a trio of cameras to offer 3D images.

Synology Rackstation RS3614xs+ Review

Synology's latest rack NAS appliance offers a truckload of enterprise storage capabilities at a price that makes it attractive to SMBs. It packs an impressive feature list, and the DSM 5 browser-management software adds even more to the pot.

The 2U chassis supports up to 12 hot-swap SATA hard disks, and 12-bay RX1214 or RX1214RP disk shelves can be hot-plugged into the pair of 6Gbits/sec SAS interfaces at the rear. There are a quartet of Gigabit ports, and the two PCI Express slots accept Intel and Emulex 10GbE cards.

Brother HL-L8350CDW Review

Brother's HL-L8350CDW is a compact colour laser aimed at businesses on a budget. It costs less than £300, and supports wired and wireless printing, integral duplexing and handy mobile features, with a promised 30ppm print speed for colour and mono.

It's a decent deal, and running costs are reasonable too. Standard cartridges work out at 2.2p per mono page and 13p for colour; the 6,000-page, super-high-yield versions cut costs to 1.6p and 8.2p.

Minecraft Could Boost Microsoft's Mobile Reach

Microsoft will acquire the maker of the long-running hit game Minecraft for $2.5 billion as the company continues to invest in its Xbox gaming platform and looks to grab attention on mobile phones.

The technology company said it will buy Stockholm-based game maker Mojang in a deal expected to close in late 2014.

Minecraft, which lets users build in and explore a Lego-like virtual multiplayer world, has been downloaded 100 million times on PC alone since its launch in 2009. It is the most popular online game on Xbox, and the top paid app for Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating system in the U.S.

Techland Advances 'Dying Light' Release Date to January 27

Dying Light, an open-world survival adventure video game, will be hitting the shelves, the tweet by Techland not only mentions "January | 27 | 2015" but also shows an in-game image showing the ground painted with the release date.

Dying Light is set in an epidemic-struck urban environment where players search for supplies and craft weapons during the day and use the supplies, skills and weapons to survive zombie attacks during the night.

Notably, the plague-stricken zombies only attack during the night-time, which is the main catch of the game.

Leap Motion Brings Gesture Control Support to Oculus Rift VR Headset

While the Oculus Rift seems to be setting the stage to bring virtual reality to the mainstream, there are still some roadblocks along the way, and one of those is that even relatively powerful laptops struggle to handle the processing load required.

Leap Motion launched its sensor, the Leap, in 2012 - the small sensor is the size of a 3G dongle, and can be placed under your computer's screen. It tracks movements in a small area and can accurately track all your fingers, which means it can be used with a great degree of accuracy to bring gesture driven controls to the PC.

Gigabyte GeForce GT 640 OC Review

Take an nVidia GT 640 and wind up the speed a little to make a Gigabyte GeForce GT 640 OC, the overclocked version of nVidia's new budget graphics card.

This Gigabyte version, the Gigabyte GeForce GT 640 OC, is quite an improvement on the standard nVidia GT 640. The core clock speed has been pushed up from 900MHz to 1050MHz. And the memory clock speed has been marginally increased from 891MHz to 900MHz.

eVGA GTX 660 Ti Review

The GTX 670 had one functional block disabled, but the new GTX 660 really only cuts out one key feature: one of the memory controller blocks. This reduces the data width to memory to 192 bits wide, versus the 256 bit pathways available on the GTX 680 and GTX 670.

Since the ROP (raster operations) unit is part of that block, the number of ROP units are now 24 instead of 32. The clock rate is a little lower as well.
